Vallejo

Vallejo is a Spanish manufacturer of water-based acrylic paints and one of the most respected names in scale modelling and miniature painting worldwide. The company was established in 1965 by Amadeo Vallejo in New Jersey, USA, where it initially produced Film Color, a waterbased acrylic paint for animated film studios. Clients included Hanna-Barbera, the studio behind Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones and Yogi Bear. In 1969, the company relocated to Spain, and in 1972 Amadeo developed Acrylic Artist Color, the first acrylic for fine arts manufactured in Spain and one of the first in Europe. In 1986, Vallejo formulated the first acrylic paints specifically designed for airbrushing, and by the early 1990s the company had turned its attention to the scale modelling community with the launch of Model Color.

Today, Acrylicos Vallejo exports to over 55 countries from its production facility near Barcelona. The hobby range includes Model Color (over 220 opaque acrylic shades for brush painting), Model Air (airbrush-ready acrylics with extra-fine pigments), Game Color (high-saturation paints for fantasy and wargaming miniatures), Xpress Color (single-coat paints for rapid painting), Metal Color (buffable metallic paints) and Mecha Color (for sci-fi and robot subjects). The range is completed by primers, varnishes, weathering products, texture pastes, pigments and a full line of modelling tools. All Vallejo hobby paints are supplied in the brand's signature 17ml dropper bottles.

Vallejo Model Colour and Game Colour Paints

Vallejo is a Spanish manufacturer of premium water-based acrylic paints, widely regarded as one of the finest paint ranges available for miniature painting, scale modelling and airbrushing. The Model Colour range is the core of the Vallejo system, offering over 200 colours in 17ml dropper bottles. The dropper bottle format allows precise paint dispensing, reduces waste and keeps paint fresh far longer than traditional screw-top pots.

Model Colour paints are formulated for brush application, providing excellent coverage, smooth flow and a matt finish that is ideal for scale models, military vehicles, figures and dioramas. The Game Colour range is designed specifically for fantasy and wargaming miniatures, with a slightly different formulation optimised for the smaller surfaces and finer details found on miniature figures.

Vallejo Model Air, Primers and Weathering Products

Vallejo Model Air is a dedicated airbrush paint range, pre-thinned to the correct consistency for immediate use through an airbrush without further dilution. The range covers over 200 colours and is particularly popular with aircraft modellers and armour builders who rely on airbrushing for smooth, even base coats and camouflage patterns.

The Vallejo Surface Primer range provides excellent adhesion on plastic, resin and metal surfaces, available in multiple colours for both brush and airbrush application. The weathering product range includes washes, pigments and weathering effects that allow modellers to add realistic dirt, rust, grime, oil stains and environmental wear to their models.

Are Vallejo paints water-based?
Yes. All Vallejo paints are water-based acrylics. They are non-toxic, low odour, and can be thinned and cleaned up with water. Despite being water-based, they provide excellent adhesion, coverage and durability once dry.
What is the difference between Model Colour and Game Colour?

Model Colour is formulated primarily for scale models, military vehicles and historical figures, providing a smooth matt finish. Game Colour is optimised for fantasy and wargaming miniatures, with slightly higher pigment density for better coverage on small surfaces. Both ranges are fully intermixable.

Can Vallejo paints be used in an airbrush?
application without further dilution. Model Air is the recommended choice for airbrushing.
