- Model Railway Locomotives
Locomotives are the powered vehicles that haul trains around a layout and are the centrepiece of any model railway collection. The range covers steam, diesel and electric prototypes spanning the full history of British and world railways, from Victorian-era tank engines to modern high-speed trains. Quality model locomotives are detailed replicas of the real machines, faithfully reproducing liveries, cab details and mechanical character at the relevant scale, and are produced by leading manufacturers including Hornby, Bachmann, Heljan and Dapol.
- Steam, Diesel and Electric Locomotives
Steam locomotives represent the classic era of British railways and remain the most collected category, ranging from small branch-line tank engines to express passenger pacifics. Diesel and electric locomotives cover the modern era from the 1950s onwards, including the iconic Class 37, 47, 66 and Intercity 125. Choosing between eras is largely a personal preference, and many enthusiasts model a specific period or region that holds particular interest for them.

- What scale locomotives are available?
Locomotives are available in a range of scales. OO scale (1:76) is the most popular in the UK with the widest selection. N scale (1:148) suits smaller layouts. O scale (1:43.5) offers larger, highly detailed models. HO scale (1:87) is the international standard. The right scale depends on your available space and the size of your existing layout.
- What is the difference between DCC and analogue locomotives?
Analogue locomotives run from a simple variable-voltage controller on a two-rail track. DCC (Digital Command Control) locomotives contain a decoder chip that allows individual control of multiple locomotives on the same track using a digital controller, as well as functions such as lighting effects and cab lighting. Many modern locomotives are DCC-ready or DCC-fitted, and DCC sound-fitted models include a speaker for realistic engine sounds.
- Are locomotives from different brands compatible?
Locomotives from different OO-scale brands such as Hornby, Bachmann and Dapol will all run on the same OO track and are electrically compatible. DCC compatibility is also broadly universal provided the controller and decoder use the same standard, which virtually all current equipment does. Our team can confirm compatibility for specific models if needed.
- What is a DCC sound-fitted locomotive?
A DCC sound-fitted locomotive includes both a DCC decoder and a speaker, allowing it to produce realistic sounds including the engine, whistle, horn, braking and other sounds specific to the prototype. Sound-fitted models require a DCC controller to operate and unlock their sound functions, and represent the most immersive way to run a model railway.
