Locomotives are available in a range of scales. OO scale (1:76) is the most popular in the UK with the widest selection. N scale (1:148) suits smaller layouts. O scale (1:43.5) offers larger, highly detailed models. HO scale (1:87) is the international standard. The right scale depends on your available space and the size of your existing layout.

Analogue locomotives run from a simple variable-voltage controller on a two-rail track. DCC (Digital Command Control) locomotives contain a decoder chip that allows individual control of multiple locomotives on the same track using a digital controller, as well as functions such as lighting effects and cab lighting. Many modern locomotives are DCC-ready or DCC-fitted, and DCC sound-fitted models include a speaker for realistic engine sounds.

Locomotives from different OO-scale brands such as Hornby, Bachmann and Dapol will all run on the same OO track and are electrically compatible. DCC compatibility is also broadly universal provided the controller and decoder use the same standard, which virtually all current equipment does. A DCC sound-fitted locomotive includes both a DCC decoder and a speaker, allowing it to produce realistic sounds including the engine, whistle, horn, braking and other sounds specific to the prototype.
