Buildings must match the scale of your layout. OO scale (1:76) is the UK standard and has the widest selection of structures. N scale (1:148) buildings are smaller. O scale (1:43.5) buildings are larger and highly detailed. Mixing scales produces an unrealistic result, so always confirm the scale before purchasing.

Ready-built structures require no assembly or painting and can be placed directly on the layout. Plastic and card kits require construction and, for plastic kits, painting and weathering for the best result. Assembly kits offer a more personalised, hands-on experience and a rewarding project alongside the layout itself.

The materials needed depend on the scene being modelled, but a typical layout uses track ballast to bed in the rails, scatter or static grass for ground cover, foliage materials for trees and hedges, and road and path surfaces. Figures, animals and vehicles add life and scale. Starting with ballast and ground scatter and building up scenery gradually is the most manageable approach.

Buildings and scenic accessories in the same scale are generally compatible regardless of brand, as they share the same proportions relative to the track and rolling stock. Small variations in the exact shade of colours may mean some mixing requires care, but structures from different manufacturers sit comfortably together on most layouts.
