Mk.3 coaches were introduced to allow trains to run at 125 mph on Britain’s Victorian-era tracks, with improvements over the earlier Mk.2 coaches including secondary air suspension between bogies and coach body, aerodynamic skirting on the underframe, disk brakes, and wheel slip protection. At 75ft (23m) long, these coaches offered greater passenger capacity and enhanced comfort for long-distance travel.

The first Mk.3 coaches were delivered in 1972 as part of the HST prototype alongside Class 41 diesel power cars.
