The Hornby Rail Charter Services Mk3 Trailer Guard First, 44081 – Era 11 is a highly detailed model coach from the Hornby Coaches range. This model faithfully reproduces the real-life Mk.3 coaches, capturing the engineering, design, and features that made them iconic on Britain’s railways.

Mk.3 coaches were introduced to allow trains to run at 125 mph on Britain’s Victorian-era railway lines. They featured significant improvements over the earlier Mk.2 coaches, including secondary air suspension between the bogies and coach body, aerodynamic skirting on the underframe, disk brakes, and wheel slip protection. At 75ft (23m) long, these coaches provided increased capacity and improved passenger comfort for long-distance services.

The first Mk.3 coaches were delivered in 1972 as part of the HST prototype, alongside Class 41 diesel power cars. They entered regular service in 1975 with Class 43 locomotives, forming the legendary InterCity 125 trainset. Later, Mk.3 coaches were adapted for use on locomotive-hauled trains as Mk.3a stock, featuring buffers and updated electrical systems to power air conditioning and other onboard services. Mk.3a coaches were produced until 1984, followed by the 3b stock built from 1985 to 1988 with further improvements in seating and lighting.

In recent years, the Rail Charter Services have revived these classic coaches for special journeys. Following the success of the Staycation Express in 2020, the 2021 service used an InterCity 125 train outfitted with first-class leather seats, private tables, and power points, running multiple times daily during the summer season.
