The Hornby BR Departmental exMk.1 First Open DB977351 is a detailed OO gauge model carriage that adds historical authenticity to any Hornby railway layout. This model represents a departmental version of the Mk.1 First Open coach, used for a variety of duties in Era 8 British Rail.

The original Mk.1 coaches were the first standardised carriages built by British Railways, introduced in 1951. Widely used across Britain, they were constructed at multiple works including Derby, Doncaster, Eastleigh, Swindon, Wolverton, and York. Their steel build, strong underframes, and buckeye couplings made them safer than earlier designs, helping reduce fatalities in rail accidents from the mid-1950s onwards.

Most Mk.1 coaches measured around 63 ft 5 in underframe and 64 ft 6 in body length, although some shorter versions were made for tighter curves. Many remained in service until the 1990s, with some departmental and rail tour use continuing into the 2000s. Modified Mk.1 coaches are still used today by Network Rail for various departmental duties.
