Bandai

Founded in Tokyo in 1950, Bandai is one of the world's largest and most recognised toy and model kit manufacturers. The company is best known in the hobby world for Gunpla: the hugely popular range of Gundam plastic model kits based on the long-running Gundam anime franchise. Since the first Gunpla kit was released in 1980, Bandai has produced thousands of kits across multiple grades, from the accessible Entry Grade and High Grade lines through to the highly detailed Master Grade and Perfect Grade.

What sets Bandai apart is its snap-fit engineering. Unlike traditional plastic model kits, Bandai kits are designed to be assembled without glue, with colour-separated parts that produce a detailed, accurate model straight from the box. This makes them an excellent entry point for newcomers to the hobby, while the complexity and engineering of higher grades satisfy experienced builders. Beyond Gundam, Bandai also produces licensed kits covering Star Wars, Pokémon and other popular franchises.

At Wonderland Models, we stock a wide selection of Bandai model kits, including Gunpla across all grades, Star Wars kits and other licensed ranges. Whether you are building your first HG kit or adding a Master Grade centrepiece to your collection, our team can help. Shop securely online for express UK shipping or visit our Edinburgh store for personalised advice.

Bandai Tools and Accessories

To get the most from Bandai kits, a set of basic modelling tools is recommended. A good pair of side cutters for removing parts from runners, a hobby knife for cleaning nub marks, and fine sandpaper or sanding sticks will produce a clean finish. For builders who want to go further, panel lining pens, top coat sprays and waterslide decals allow Bandai kits to be finished to a professional standard.

What is Gunpla?

Gunpla is short for "Gundam Plastic Model" and refers to the range of snap-fit model kits produced by Bandai based on the Gundam anime franchise. First released in 1980, Gunpla kits are designed to be assembled without glue, with colour-separated parts that produce a detailed model straight from the box.

Do Bandai kits need glue or paint?

No. Modern Bandai kits use a snap-fit system where parts click together without adhesive. Parts are moulded in the correct colours, so a finished model looks good without paint. However, many builders choose to paint, panel line and apply decals to achieve a higher level of finish.

What is the difference between HG, MG and PG Gunpla?

HG (High Grade) kits are 1/144 scale and are the most accessible, typically containing 100 to 200 parts. MG (Master Grade) kits are 1/100 scale with 300 to 600 parts and include a detailed inner frame. PG (Perfect Grade) kits are 1/60 scale, the largest and most complex, with 1,000 or more parts and the highest level of detail and engineering.

Are Bandai kits suitable for children?

Yes. Entry Grade and many High Grade kits are designed to be built by younger modellers and beginners. No glue, paint or specialist tools are required. A pair of side cutters to remove parts from the runners is the only essential tool. More advanced grades such as Master Grade and Perfect Grade are better suited to older teens and adults.
