When Napoleon had entered Warsaw he took an escort of Polish nobleman. The emperor was impressed deeply with their excellent military bearing and craftsmanship. In 1807 he ordered the formation of a regiment of Polish light cavalry. Besides the common weapons used by cavalryman - sabre, pistols, carabine - were also armed with long spears. Uhlans had participated in campaigns against Spain and Russia. When Napoleon I was thrown down and sent to Elba Island he had been escorted by 120 Polish uhlans.
