The Wessex is one of the best known helicopters of British manufacture. Following the Royal Navy's invitation to tender for a combat helicopter to fight submarines, Messrs. Westland acquired licencing rights for the S-58/H-34 in 1956. Developed on this basis the Wessex was designed for carrier-based operations. Its main features are turbo-engines instead of the piston engines, redesigned front section to the fuselage and special equipment including the latest weapon systems. The Wessex HAS Mk.3 was the technically improved version of the Mk.1 with a Gazelle 165 engine that had a power output of 1600 SHP. A striking feature is the so-called camel's back for the search radar.
