Designed by R.J. Mitchell. the prototype Spitfire made its first flight on 5th March 1936, and entered RAF service in July 1938. At the outbreak of war on 3rd September 1939, nine squadrons were operational on Spitfire I's and by the time the Battle of Britain began in July 1940, there were 19. When production ceased after the war, over 20,000 Spitfires of all types had been built.
