The
Bravo Delta Models Short S-25 Sunderland in 1/72 scale is another example from this superb
wooden aircraft model collection.
The RAF Sunderland was developed from civilian flying boats built for Imperial Airways it represented a dramatic increase in fighting capability over earlier, biplane boats. Following the outbreak of war in 1939 the Sunderland was deployed by coastal command on convey protection, utilising the aircrafts 3,000 mile range to hunt and destroy U-boats in the Atlantic. The Sunderland other principal role was serch and rescue, locating airmen and seamen in the ocean and guiding surface rescue vessels. The aircraft was so well protected and defended that the Luftwaffe nicknamed it 'the flying porcupine', flying at very low levels to prevent enemy fighters from getting below their aircraft Sunderland crews destroyed many enemy aircraft and freqently drove off their attackers. The Mark III introduced an improved hull form and from 1940 Sunderlands carried ASV radar and Leigh lights to illuminating surfaced submarines during night attacks. 739 Sunderlands were built and the veteran flying boat's last sortie took place on 15 May 1959 from Singapore.
Bravo Delta Models are exceptional museum quality wooden aircraft models and are faithfully reproduced in kiln dried Mahogany. Each is carved, joined and sanded by hand. The deep, rich finish that distinguishes these models from others is created by the application of up to 35 coats of enamel. The artist then hand paints all of the details onto each model. The final product is a beautiful authentic wooden aircraft which is fully built and finished and packed in a strong shipping carton. Every model has its own desk stand. All the propellers are made of wood and will rotate. Some of the jets have movable swing wings, also made of wood.
