Abrams fought in this tank while he was commander of the 37th Tank Battalion of the 4th Armored Division. He was an aggressive commander and his unit was frequently in the vanguard of the Third Armys advance across Northwest Europe.
While the Sherman was outmatched by larger and heavily armed German tanks, Abrams used the reliability and speed of his own vehicles to overcome his adversaries.
