The British Aerospace Harrier has the unique ability to take-off and land vertically. This is achieved by passing the airflow from its single Rolls Royce Pegasus engine out through four nozzles (two on each side of the aircraft). These nozzles may be rotated to direct the engine's thrust either directly downwards for take-off and landing, directly aft for normal forward propulsion, or to any in-between position for the transition from hovering to normal forward flight.
The incredible manoeurability of the Harrier allows it to operate from dispersed locations away from the main airfields, whose runways would be vulnerable to attack in the event of war. Operating from hide-aways and clearings in forests, the Harrier would perform tactical attacks and reconnaissance missions, mainly over battlefield areas, for which it carries a variety of weapons. This kit includes the Matra 155 rocket pods (each carrying 18 unguided rockets); fuselage mounted 30 mm Aden cannons; alternative 100 gallon (455 litre) drop tank.
