Revell Models 1/32 Heinkel He 162 A-2 "Salamander" Description
The Revell 1/32 Heinkel He 162 A-2 "Salamander" plastic aircraft model accurately recreates the real life German fighter-intercepter used at the end of World War II. This plastic aircraft kit requires paint and glue to complete.
The Heinkel He 162 A-2 Salamander was one of the most unusual aircraft of World War II. Towards the end of 1944, within a very short time, a fighter-interceptor had been built that was both fast and easy to make. The specification for this single-seat fighter was not issued by the German air ministry until September 1944. In just 69 days Heinkel, at Wien-Schwechat, had designed the new fighter, built the prototype and made a successful maiden flight. Although aluminium parts were still used for the fuselage, the wings were constructed in one piece out of wood. Due to the air superiority of the Allies the whole of the production was ultimately carried out underground. Between February and April 1945 a total of 116 aircraft were built, most of which were delivered to 1 "Oesau" Fighter Squadron at Leck, Schleswig Holstein. The notorious fuel shortages at the end of the war prevented the extensive use of the He 162. The last one took to the air on 4th May 1945 and ended by shooting down a Hawker Typhoon.
