The E-3A Sentry is a mobile platform from which flight movements can bemonitored within a radius of 322 km and the operations of the home air force can be controlled. Based on a converted Boeing 707 the E-3A is equipped with a high-performance APY-1 surveillance radar and also an Identification Friend or Foe radar, the antenna system of which is located in a rotodome on the top of the NATO machines are located on the "Geilenkirchen" air base. In addition to the permanent surveillance of the home air space, this early warning system is particularly important in times of crisis such as the Kosovo and Afghanistan conflicts.
